Balancing the protection of archaeological sites with the need to make them accessible to the public is essential in order to ensure that archaeological sites are preserved for future generations, while also providing an opportunity for people to learn about and appreciate the world’s cultural heritage. One of the main challenges of achieving this balance is the inherent tensions between preservation and public access. It is important to recognize the risks of harm to archaeological sites that can arise from unrestricted public access, such as increased foot traffic, vandalism, and theft. At the same time, it is also important to recognize the value of public access to archaeological sites, which presents a great educational and research opportunity that should be made available to people of all backgrounds and ages. Strategies for balancing protection and public access should focus on measures such as employing adequate site management and conservation techniques, ensuring proper visitor education and engagement, and decreasing potential harm caused by unauthorized activities or vandalism. For instance, employing innovative technologies, such as interactive digital tools, to enable remote educational exploration while still protecting a site, can prove to be a useful and cost-effective strategy of achieving this balance. Ultimately, successfully balancing the need to protect archaeological sites with the need to make them accessible to the public requires a holistic approach that considers cultural and ethical priorities and makes use of available methodologies and technologies. The Register is pleased to partner with several organizations, big and small, local and widespread, to help provide networking opportunities, mentorship, and expertise to help preserve sites and educate the public. Retrofit seems to be the latest buzz word and trends in our industry. How many of the 59% of applications HE mention were works to traditionally built historic buildings? Are you involved in the retrofit of historic buildings? I would be interested in having a chat with you about your work.

📢 We have published the latest Local Authority Staffing Survey results. The survey collects statistics on local authority staff in building conservation and archaeology roles, and monitors the capability of heritage teams. Some of the highlights include:🔶 Local Authority historic environment staff numbers remained constant between 2020 and 2023 with a small increase of 2%. However, this modest increase remains overshadowed by the substantial 35% decline in staff numbers between 2006 and 2018.🔶 59% of responding local authorities said staff are seeing more case work involving retrofit.🔶 Only 16% said local authority historic environment staff were ‘very confident’ in making decisions about energy efficient retrofit proposals.See the results ➡️ https://lnkd.in/eH6nmcas

This is HE marketing glossing over the reality putting the onus on local authorities for whom many buildings are under the planning departments decision making teams The variation from each authority from hardly any involvement and trusting the owner to full on involvement and a dont touch that building attitude is because of antiquated guidelines by HE when planning has to also meet new planning lawsHE refers in this report to climate change effectively saying authorities are incompetent If we take a very small part of what HE are saying in this climate change blurb the facts are that the full impact of the the 2022 building regulations concentrating on energy efficiency and insulation can be detrimental to a building. In fact Part F not mentioned is about ventilation. This small omission is especially important for historic buildings where natural materials need to coexist HE needs to accept change to 21St century living standards otherwise we will have empty buildings This is just a very small part of change that HE needs to accept - so sad they continue this way . Scheduled Monuments from @Historic Environment Scotland is #DatasetOfTheWeekScheduled monuments are nationally important monuments and sites. The aim of scheduling is to preserve sites and monuments as far as possible in the form in which they have come down to us today. They are legally protected through the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act 1979. National importance takes account of a wide range of factors, including artistic, archaeological, architectural, historic, traditional, aesthetic, scientific and social. Guidance and criteria to assess national importance of monuments is set out by Scottish Ministers in The Scottish Historic Environment Policy. This data allows you to identify the approximate position, size and extent of scheduled monuments in Scotland. The purpose of this dataset is for importation into licence holders GIS applications to allow the user to identify the approximate position, size and extent of scheduled monuments in Scotland. Do you need help with Pre -Planning?Itis always best to identify any potential archaeological and heritage issues at the earliest opportunity. Such issues can be with the setting of a designated heritage assets, or archaeological remains that could prove costly to remove or present a constraint on development. We are always happy to provide an initial appraisal, whether that be a fairly informal ‘heads up’ or a more detailed document for a formal pre-app with the LPA.
