New BMW 4 Series and M4 design

This is just a mid-life facelift for the BMW 4 Series coupe and convertible, so those massive teeth up front aren’t going anywhere.

What has changed at the font is the headlights. They may have the same sleek shape as before, but the LED structure inside has been changed to make them look more modern. The M440i version pictured here also has a new grille with vertical slats, as opposed to the chequered pattern you got before.

Looking to the rear, the tail lights are the main change. They share the same design as the BMW M4 CSL, and feature laser technology to create an intricate design. You also now get larger exhaust surrounds, and the lower bumper has been tweaked as well.

An augmented reality sat nav system is also now available, a feature we first saw on the new BMW 7 Series. This will show you a camera feed of the road ahead with graphics overlaid showing you were to go.

New BMW 4 Series engines

BMW has stopped offering diesel engines for the 4 Series coupe and convertible, so you now have a much more simple choice of two petrol engines. The 420i uses a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine with 184hp, and the coupe will do 0-60mph in 7.5 seconds. The added weight of the convertible raises this to 8.2 seconds.

Then you have the more spicy M440i model, which uses a 3.0-litre turbocharged straight-six with 374hp. That’s slightly down on the 381hp you get from 3.0-litre versions of the Mercedes CLE, and it’s a bit slower to 60mph than that car as well. Coupe versions of the M440i will do 0-60mph in 4.5 seconds, rising to 4.9 seconds in the convertible.

New BMW M4 engine and performance

You still get a twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre straight-six under the bonnet of the new BMW M4, however it’s been fettled for a touch more power. It now puts out 530hp, up from 510hp in the previous car.

That’s a whopping 80hp more than the Audi RS5, and this power is sent to all four wheels via an eight speed automatic gearbox. All this results in a 0-60mph time of 3.5 seconds, almost half a second quicker than the RS5.

There’s no pure rear-wheel-drive version of the M4 anymore, with all cars getting all-wheel-drive. Unlike the system you get in Audis though, you can switch to rear-wheel-drive mode at the touch of a button for some tyre-shredding shenanigans.
